Bonaparte, Joseph
(1768-1844)
   king of Spain, brother of Napoléon I
   Born in Corte, Corsica, the son of maria letizia ramolino and carlo maria bonaparte, and the older brother of napoléon i, Joseph Bonaparte served as deputy for Corsica to the Council of Five Hundred (1796). He also participated in the planning of the coup d'état of 18 Brumaire (1799), which brought his brother to power (see napoléon i). In charge of various diplomatic missions during the Consulate, Joseph Bonaparte, in 1801, signed the Treaty of Lunéville, the Peace of Amiens, and the Concordat. His brother then made him king of Naples (1806-08), and subsequently king of Spain (1808-13). He went to the United States after Waterloo, then to England, and finally to Florence, Italy. He married Julie Clary in 1794.
